The warehouse is a place to hold supplies until needed by a consumer. Supplies may be food, grain, money, spare parts, sprockets, or widgets. Anything that can be stored for a period of time is being warehoused. The course is to help employees new to warehousing and distribution as well as cross functional departments / organizations (i.e. business development, finance, purchasing, and replenishment)to better understand the importance, purpose, and role warehousing and distribution plays in the supply chain.
There are multiple types of warehouses. Each may require a different operations approach as well as different systems to help manage them. This course will expose each of these "flavors" of warehousing.
Course Objectives
· Understand how warehousing and distribution developed and became an important function of the organization
· Appreciate and understand the importance of properly managing inventory in a facility
· Provide an understanding of the different activities, functions, jobs, and roles in a facility
· Describe the warehouse's place in the supply chain
· Discuss the role of warehousing in our economy
· Describe the various types of warehouses
· Highlight the processes of receiving and order picking within different types of warehouses
· Discuss unitizing, specialized storage, and equipment management
· Describe the types of information systems used in various warehouses
